The first generation Range Rover was a highly capable and equally utilitarian off-road vehicle. equipped with a plastic dashboard and vinyl seats, the interior lacked anything in the way of luxury. Range Rovers of today share the off-road capability of the original, but not much else. In today’s world of mall crawling luxury 4×4’s, the Range Rover has had to adapt to its modern competition such as the Mercedes S-Class and Bentley Continental. While competing in the same weight class as the high end luxury cars in the high-end luxury cars in the interior and styling department, the Range Rover still remains formidable among today’s less street-able 4WD SUVs. Land Rover’s Terrain Response 2 system allows the driver to adjust the suspension, braking, and differential parameters to best suit whatever driving surface they might encounter with a turn of the wrist.
This combination of off-road party tricks and cutting edge technology and design makes for an almost perfect vehicle: rugged enough for an afternoon on the trails and sophisticated enough for Sunday dinner downtown. Now you’re probably thinking “wow, this is the most well rounded, capable car money can buy.” I regret to inform you that there is, in fact, a more perfect car, and that car is the Range Rover HSE Supercharged. Sporting a 5.0 liter supercharged V8 which serves up 510 brake horsepower and 461 ft lb. of torque. Thats nearly as much power as you get in the comparable G63 AMG, but instead of 70’s utilitarian styling, you get modern contemporary design and none of the unsettling torque-steer.
The refinement, stability, and ferocity of the Range Rover HSE Supercharged is something that needs to experienced first hand to understand, as words simply do not do this car justice. By far the best way to really get a feel for the Range Rover is through mph club.
